| BACKGROUND & HISTORY |
|
Where Darius was born not even he knows. Anjil and Vijar enjoyed visiting various planets much like several other Watchers of the period, masquerading as native inhabitants while discreetly studying and observing the various differences in culture and belief from planet to planet. Darius was born on some little spit of a world near the Beta Quadrant Galactic Rim,
accompanying them as they went from planet to planet for the first century of his life. It was while on Earth in the 17th century that fate dealt Darius a most distressing hand - while onboard the HMS Destiny the crew mutinied against the relatively small compliment of officers, Vijar and Anjil dying in the crossfire. Taken in under the mutineers flag, Darius masqueraded as a willing buccaneer to gain the mutineers trust. 8 years later he personally avenged his parents, butchering every last member of the crew responsible for their deaths. During this time the HMS Defiant had been tracking the commmandeered Destiny, catching up to the drifting vessel two days later. The boarding parties found naught but corpses and one survivor, who hailed himself as Darius Slaughter. Thus came his fascination with the sea and vessels of all natures: air, space, and nautical alike. Over the centuries Darius had to maintain a constant vigil. After a period of time the man would dissappear, only to reemerge decades later under a new identity and nationality. Initially it was easy, so many people being lost at sea or to attacks from various native inhabitants of the New World. It was only with the emergence of relatively high technology that Darius began to have difficulties. Much like the Highlander stories (which he no doubt fueled the inspiration of) Darius had to be careful who he got close to, and he was especially vigilant in his social relations to never sire any offspring, more out of concern for the child than his own welfare. He had centuries of experience in altering his personality and identity, he wouldn't force that on any progeny of his if he could help it. With the Information Age rising up the advent of computers, centralized databases and other innovations nearly destroyed Darius' carefully crafted facade on multiple occasions. To counter this the man moved to Russia, eventually serving time in the Red Army during World War 2. Siberia and other relatively desolate locations were becoming more and more scarce with the spread of technology. The Eugenics Wars helped Darius, and World War III was to be his salvation. With the destruction of the major cities came the loss of the greater part of the world wide databases, and Darius could move freely once again without needing to worry about being discovered for what he truly was - an extra terrestrial. It was only after the formation of the UESPA that Darius finally revealed his biological nature. At first the United Earth authorities laughed in his face. Carefully preserved documents from his days in England, Russia, his 30 decade span of 'citizenship' in the USA, and other photographic references spanning at least 3 centuries was more than convincing. Given human nature towards those strange or different, the UE government's only response was to evict Darius from Earth. Darius happily left, washing his hands of the world for good. Or so he thought. Darius spent the next 300 years (give or take) exploring space once again, and in general staying out of the way of the humans who spread through the quadrant faster than their government could keep up with them. The formation of the United Federation of Planets was taken with a grain of salt; Darius had seen more than enough of humans to know there would eventually be troubles. Politicians were never to be trusted in Darius's eyes, regardless of what they said or did. They never had YOUR best interests in mind. Never. With the recovery of the El-Aurian refugees from the Nexus ribbon came the lifting of the bar against Darius setting foot on Terra. He still avoided the place, even though the people responsible for his being removed from earth in the first place were long since dead. It wasn't until 2364 that he returned, this time with a purpose - he had been accepted into Starfleet. Now most people take four years to complete their Academy training. Physicians are notable exceptions for obvious reasons. Darius was another. During his third year the 870 year old man switched tracks entering the Starfleet Fighter corp. His admission was conditional, and it's something he's never forgotten. Because of his 'advanced age' Darius was given little leeway when it came to physical conduct. Oh they knew he had the course material down pat, but he was competing against 'youngsters' a fraction of his age, potential pilots with younger, fresher bodies. If he was physically incapable of performing ANY of the tasks required he would be returned to his original path as a science cadet with no appeal or possibility of retest. Darius simply grinned and said, "Matey, the question ye should be askin' yerself tain't whether I can or naught. Rather, ye should be asking yerself: 'can the mangey whelps keep up with me?' " He graduated in the top 10%. This was characteristic of the first decade of his service within the SFFC. Every new pilot to come to his unit fresh out the Academy looked at him, saw his apparent age, and promptly took him for some old man desperately holding on to an era that was dead and gone. Much like Disco, of which Darius is admittedly fond of. He was more than happy to show he could more than keep up with these spritely young pups. Piloting, physical competitions, academics, he excelled at them all. |
