BACKGROUND & HISTORY
James Robin Maughan was born in Monmouth, Wales, to Robin and Myfanwy Maughan. He was their first and would be their only child. James grew up close to England, and his father, who didn't speak Welsh, insisted on English being the spoken language in their home. From an early age, James had an interest in music, especially 20th century music, after his grandfather who had used to play it. It was he who taught James how to play the guitar and sing, and spent hours with him talking about mythology and literature. When James was 11, the family left Wales for Starbase 313, where his mother had gotten a scientist position. From the first moment when James put his foot on a shuttle he knew he wanted to be a Starfleet officer. It was something that burned inside of him, almost desperately.

He worked hard in his studies so that he could one day be qualified. His free time, as a teenager, was spent singing with the small band he formed. They were mediocre, but with enough passion to have them last until they all went to Starfleet Academy. In his teenage years, James had been rebellious, hating being told what to do, but it died out the moment he went to the first lecture at the Academy. After many tests, he was seen to be somewhat of a natural at operations. He picked up things quickly, and minored in engineering just because it was linked to Operations. While studying, he developed an interest in literary criticism, burying himself in the books of some of the greats. If anything, it was something to calm his hectic mind, and free him from the moments of pure boredom.

After graduating he was sent to the USS Saratoga, where he served as an Operation's officer. He showed his talent quickly, but also the arrogance to be lazy. It was something that took him awhile to shake out of...because of a quick mind, he got away with doing less. But the moment his Captain caught this, he was shaken from it, and managed to get himself to work properly, showing great potential. Unfortunately, it wasn't soon enough for his Captain, who sent him off to another ship to serve as soon as she could possibly allow.
PERSONALITY PROFILE
James isn't as hard-working as he wished he was. He is intelligent and passionate, but gets distracted easily by others things. He enjoys a drink with friends, his music, his reading and just having fun...unfortunately, it clashes with the promising career he has within Operations. He is also passionate about his background, even if he has somewhat forgotten Welsh over the years. He gets lonely easily and doesn't make friends well...those that might call themselves his friends aren't necessarily considered such by him. He is also unsure about himself, more towards his sexuality mixed with the homophobia he has.
SPECIAL CHARACTER NOTES
James' passion for music has often caught him singing in a soft but deep voice at his station. His previous Captain recommends a firm slap to the back of the head to stop such behaviour.
WRITER'S NOTES
This character was invented after watching one too many episodes of Torchwood, watching Gareth David-Lloyd muck about and listening to David Bowie. Scared yet? I am...I just want to try someone who I can write without having to pair up with someone.
