| BACKGROUND & HISTORY |
|
Paul was born to Lillith and Theodore Kestrel
on May 1st, 2375. He was a life long 'moon man', born and raised in the Lake Armstrong
township of Luna. He had an average childhood for someone growing up in the Sol system, with
access to every amenity and necessity, as well as one of the best all around educational
systems in the Quadrant. By no means a 'genius', Paul never the less did well enough to
consistently score in the top quarter of his class, a performance which would see him through
to Starfleet Academy. He did exceptionally well, earning respectable grades, graduating cum
laude, and concentrating in the field of Starship Operations as well as receiving an advanced
pilot's certification. His first assignment was as a runabout pilot with the 24th Utility Squadron, operating out of Starbase Betazed. It was an easy, low-key assignment in a support role for Starfleet, usually attached to Betazed's planetary defenses or performing cargo-runs and basic law-enforcement activities. It was during this first assignment that Paul distinguished himself, when the out of the way posting suddenly took center stage. There had been a sudden and violent transition of states in a nearby nebula, turning the once trodden and docile area of space into a violent, turbulent region. The Defiant Class starship Commanche, which had been conducting normal policing and patrolling exercises in the area, had been caught unaware dead center in the anomaly. With full sized starships being too large to risk, and Paul's runabout coincidentally already launched, then Ensign Kestrel took his runabout Manifest Destiny into the anomaly. In an amazing display of navigation (and luck), the Danube class Runabout was able to make it's way to the stricken starship. Paul managed to transport over to the bridge, and in a full EVA suit restored manual flight-control systems and piloted both the Commanche and his runabout (through remote access) out of the turbulence. Of the crew of 50, 36 had survived, and the success had earned him the prestigious Distinguished Flying Cross medal. He'd completed his first tour of duty in 2397, and had been promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade. At this time he'd gained an interest in the legal profession, so much so that he applied and was accepted to New York University's School of Law. He graduated in the middle of his class, receiving a temporary assignment as a Port Operations Specialist and legal advisor on Starbase Atlantis, before receiving a permanent assignment to the JAG detachment on the same. He received a merited promotion to Lieutenant, however other than the horrors of court hearings and trial preparation, it was a very quiet assignment. Mid-2404 brought a new assignment, this time as the Chief Operations Officer aboard the Federation Starship 'Growler'. The Intrepid class vessel was assigned a long-range expedition to the Gamma Quadrant, which was considered extremely successful. The Growler and her crew made first contact with 17 separate species, encountered 4 first-viewed anomalies, and cured 3 separate medical scourges among native populations. The Growler supported the groundbreaking of half a dozen Federation colonies and ground stations, and survived over a dozen tactical engagements. It was a wealth of experience gained in a fairly short time, and an assignment that did much to 'shape' Paul's style of command. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 2406 prior to Growler's return to dock, and was transferred to the Providence shortly there after. In mid-2406 the Sovereign class Providence began it's own long-range exploration mission. She had been dispatched to the proximal areas of the Delta Quadrant, expanding the boundaries of scientific and social understanding of the galaxy. On one particular mission, Paul lead an away team which managed to negotiate a cease-fire and series of peace building initiatives behind a triumverate of local powers which had been at near constant war since the early 2300's. A permanent Federation presence was established by the Providence, which has been moderately successful given the Council's objectives. In 2408 Paul had the rare opportunity to attend Starfleet's Command School in San Francisco. It was a stepping stone to eventually receiving an individual command, and one he wasn't about to pass up. For once he did exceptionally well, proving himself an 'original' thinker when it came to solving the wide variety of problems likely to be encountered by a Starfleet Captain. It was at the year spent at the Command School that he met, and fell in love with his wife Shiya Imani. The two had a whirl-wind romance, one that continued onto their next posting aboard the Challenger. The Galaxy Class starship Challenger was dispatched to the Beta Quadrant. Starfleet's growing demands in the new realities of the Alpha Quadrant coupled with increasing difficulty in meeting deployment goals had left the Beta Quadrant territories of the Federation undermanned and poorly defended. Piracy, raids, and criminal behavior were on the rise, so the Challenger's arrival was fortuitous. She, and her accompanying task force of starships, 20 vessels in total, managed to solidify Federation control over the border areas and provide significant material and technical assistance to member worlds at a time where it was probably most needed. The assignment was also the beginning of a new life, through marriage. (And yes, it was a traditional Betazoid ceremony since you're undoubtedly wondering.) Although the Challenger had been home for almost 3 years, all good things eventually come to an end. In 2411 she returned to the Antares shipyards for a critically needed refitting, and most of her crew (senior staff included) were dispersed to other ships in the fleet. Paul and Shiya found their way to the Prospero, which had convenient openings for both. |
