BACKGROUND & HISTORY
Aran Dav'ra was, quite frankly, the product of an emergency shot-gun marriage. In concert with the main assault against Deep Space 9, the opening battles of the Dominion War included a Dominion assault on the recently established, and jointly administered New Monrovia colony... at that time under Federation protectorship with a high Stagnorian population density. Located at the border, it was a fairly strategic class M world, with access to the heavily resource laden asteroid belt just over the border.

From the beginning it was realized that Starfleet could commit relatively few resources to the battle for this system, and the CAW, entangled in a neutrality agreement with the Dominion, didn't want to jepordize their situation by sending a fleet to defend, what was for all intensive purposes, a Federation world. As a result, they were promised that all CAW citizens on the planet would be treated as sovereign, separate people protected by the bounds of the treaty. This extended, as per Stagnorian tradition, to spouses, regardless of their original birthplace.

This is how one (then Lieutenant) Leneo Garone, in charge of consulate security on the planet, and Yanara Dav'ra came across each other. With Starfleet resources tied up, and knowing an invasion was coming up, a mass marriage ceremony was begun between every available CAW citizen and the Starfleet personnel and civilians likely to be most targeted. Knowing if the Dominion found out it would be grounds for 'all' inhabitants to be treated as hostile, computer records were forged before the system was conveniently 'irreparably damaged' during one of the Jem H'adar's raids... leaving no indication of who was 'actually' married, and who had been implicit in the marriages of convenience.

The Dominion troops were suspicious almost from the start, so many mixed marriages striking them as unlikely, especially given the conspicuously young ages of some of the 'couples' and their living habits. None the less, they managed to maintain enough of a gilded genuineship that no hard evidence could be produced to the contrary, and not wanting to risk another power allying against them, the Dominion was complacent for the first few months. Over this time, Leneo and Yanara, like many of the couples, became accustomed to living as husband and wife... eventually blossoming into love.

As if the family history wasn't 'colorful' enough, life under the occupation was difficult. Immediately after the Dominion had landed, a guerilla warfare had been waged between Starfleet resistance pockets and the Jem H'adar and Cardassian occupiers. As the planet was handed over increasingly to Cardassian rear-echelon forces to free up Jem H'adar for front line action, determination to apprehend these guerillas lead to wide-scale detainments and 'questioning' sessions, permissable under the treaty. One day Leneo was picked up by Cardassian authorities for such a questioning session, and knowing full well that involved torture, Yanara resolved to save her husband. Five months pregnant, and with no prior military or negotiation skills, the Stagnorian woman strapped on a backpack filled with 'borrowed' gold-pressed latinum (left over from those citizens able to escape before the invasion) and made her way on foot, cross-country, almost twenty-five kilometers to the Cardassian camp... evading patrols where possible, bribing for passage where necessary.

When the exhausted, and obviously burdened woman finally reached the detainment facility, the Cardassian guards, underpaid as they were, and impressed with the circumstances behind her journey, agreed to let her husband go for a considerable fee. It was rather obvious to them that he wasn't behind the raids, and there seemed little harm in taking a bribe in this instance.

Aran was born several months later, and his first eighteen months of life was spent under the constant threat of Dominion harrassment. The defeat of the Dominion forces brought New Monrovia back under the auspices of Federation control, and a return of normalcy to the world. Unfortunately it also meant his father was forced to chose between his career, or the family that had been established. Having increasingly grown fond of a second woman, and unable to neglect his duties, Leneo had their ceremony anulled. Yanara relocated with Aran to the CAW world of Al'Klei'sh when he was the age of five.

Aran did well in school, never doing 'astoundingly' so, but also never fully committing himself. A life of relative physical ease and Academic rigor was tempting to many, however he had always preferred the 'practical' sides of things. As a result, rather than study theoretical mathematics, he followed a passion for woodworking and crafting. Rather than devour the great galactic works of literature, he spent his time outdoors, engaging in a full spectrum of sports and activities. Rather than spend time analyzing and debating scientific hypotheses, he was much happier playing games. The one subject he did show consistant excellence in was history, particularly aspects of military history and hopology, and sociology.

Like many Stagnorian children, he enrolled in a junior military program at the age of eight, and rather enjoyed the environment, and the social contact. Continuing to hum-drum through school, Aran finally had enough and dropped out during his required secondary education. Through some creative story telling, he was able to hide this fact, and while under-age joined the Alpha Quadrant Defense Forces Starborne Ranger Corps. Here he excelled, despite the daunting, and at times torturous training regimen. He graduated Recruit training with honorable mention and sharp-shooter qualification, and scored perfect evaluation marks during the amphibious operations certification course.

Following initial basic training, Aran completed a six month long Advanced Infantry certification course, earning the best evaluation in his class of two-thousand five-hundred, as well as the Advanced Infantry medalion and counter-insurgency and HEAT (Hostile Environment, Altitude, and Terrain) badges. Here he met the quit-essential first love, a woman by the name of Cyrila Delori. They'd known each other since basic, and had grown particularly close throughout the four month long advanced infantry course, resulting in a brief romantic interlude. Unfortunately they were very different people, cracks in the bridge of love soon forced the foundation to fracture, and neither have seen the other since.

Aran again excelled on the ACE (Advanced Course Examination) for the Infantry program, and was one of just fifty students in his class of five-hundred recommended for the Special Warfare Certification Course. SWC dealt primarily with Special Operations, reconaissance and scouting, and counter-insurgency methodology, in addition to significant sociology and technology coursework. He, and just about a quarter of the one-thousand students to begin the training passed successfully, earning the SWC (Special Warfare Capable) medalion. After completion, he was assigned to the elite 173rd Starborne Brigade, which was one of the central units engaged in defending CAW territory in the Alpha Quadrant from the Aean. The 173rd was also crucial in helping to maintain order in places where allied forces were too thin to cover adequately. They earned a reputation for tactical cunning and bravery, using the minimal amount of force necessary to subdue opponents. The most notable of the 173rd's missions, headed by their attached Pioneer squad, included the first gathering of Aean genetic samples, and the first successful test of the Cardassian-Romulan bio-genetic weapon. The Brigade was then used as a Rapid Response force, credited with saving crew members from the stricken USS Byzantium, and several non-Federation, allied vessels. These emergency actions formed the backbone of the 173rd's mission profile during the war, the unit never really being tasked to conduct the amphibious operations for which it was trained.

Aran, for his part in the unit's successes, was awarded the Confederate Soldier's Medal for 'distinguished service characterized by resolute courage, fortitude, and bravery' along with a Confederate Presidential Unit Citation medalion.

By the time the 173rd was finally rotated off the front lines, they had spent a total of eighteen months on the front... the longest continuous deployment of a brigade in AQDF history. Unfortunately, Aran's success would simultaneously be his undoing. While investigating reports that would lead to his awards, an advocate uncovered evidence of Aran's past, the fact he had lied about his age 'and' hadn't completed the basic education requirements. The finding was saddening, as it would typically lead to court martial, and certainly necessitated a removal from service. In light of his service history however, it was decided that he would be given an early, honorable discharge, be allowed to keep his service record and awards, but barred from returning. It was more than a fair offering, but the latter prohibition would be the source of considerable rancor.

Forced back into civilian life, Aran held several different 'professions', typically as a carpenter or handyman. He 'tried' to maintain a social life, and even actively sought out the opportunity to engage in courtship. None of the work, nor the social side engagements were satisfactory however... he had come to love the regimented structure of the military, and found it difficult adjusting to life without clear guidance or direction. After several months he decided that if he couldn't be in service to his own people, he would serve one of their allies. The over-riding, obvious choice was the Federation, and Starfleet.

Aran had initially enlisted, before an instructor had noted his considerable abilities and experience already, and suggested his leadership skills would best be used at the Academy. Subsequently, Aran received a recommendation from the commanding officer of the training center, and completed an application for the Academy. The Academy itself expressed concern over his lack of educational credentials, and granted him probationary status as a cadet after administering an assessment test.

Starfleet Academy, with it's comparatively lax discipline, open social atmosphere, and entirely different standards was completely different from the experiences Aran had gone through previously. It showed as he struggled to do well the first semester, however that was destined to change. He met a human woman by the name of Dana LeAnn Collins, a free spirit red-head to whom he owes much of his present to. She helped straighten him out to the point that by his second year he was routinely sited for academic honors, and all doubt of his capability finally layed to rest. They were never an actual couple, and one of the few regrets Aran retains is not pursuing a relationship with the woman.

In his senior year, with perfect grades in tactics and near-perfect grades in diplomacy, the dual major was invited to be a student instructor of Basic tactics, helping fellow cadets meet the rudimentary tactical training requirements at Starfleet. He graduated the same year, Summa Cum Laude, from the San Francisco campus, and was due for his first posting on the Discovery, an Intrepid Class ship being assigned to deep space exploration in the Beta Quadrant in search of new mineral deposits and potential colony sites. His unique skills were valuable on the three-year tour. Although rarely serving in his original capacity as a Tactical officer, his enhanced diplomatic skills came in handy several times, particularly when dealing with unitary worlds with which the Federation sought economic and political relations. The successful cruise ended with two new colonies being established, and diplomatic contact with half a dozen new species being opened. Exactly how the negotiations went were often not fully recorded, though success is never argued with, and Aran was granted a recommendation to Starfleet Advanced Tactical School, a challenge he believed would be worth while, and eagerly awaited.

Unfortunately, like Starfleet Academy, it was far from the challenge he had invisioned it to be. Although half the class washes out every year, it was rather easy compared to his time in the AQDF, and without feeling compelled to push himself he fell into the average for those few who passed.

Following the school, he was assigned to another ship, the USS Belfast, which was dispatched on a two-year long Gamma Quadrant survey. Although quiet at first, the mission ran into some trouble when it encountered a xeno-phobic race called the Ryani. For his actions during an attempted boarding of the vessel, Aran was given a commendation and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade when the ship returned.

Having spent several years from home, and offered the rare opportunity to select his next assignment, Aran requested transfer to the Diplomatic Security attachment at the Federation Embassy on Al'Klei'sh. Here he served for a three-year rotation, spending his off time in pursuit of a graduate degree. He helped strengthen security measures at the embassy, and as a result was promoted to Lieutenant, nothing of particular professional interest happening at the posting.

After a Paramedical certification course at Starfleet Medical, Aran received his first 'command' position as the Chief Tactical Officer aboard the Soverign Class Providence. The Providence was dispatched on a two-year exploration mission towards the Galactic Core. The ship encountered over a dozen new species, and for a month long period was subjected to near continuous attack as she found herself in the middle of a trading war. Leading the away team that rescued the family of a Deronian Ambassador earned him the respect of the Deronian people, and helped cement relations with this small interplanetary consortium, the benefits of which remain to be access to rare material resources and a secured route towards that area of the Galactic Core. Aran received a commendation for his actions.

It was on the Providence that he discovered, as a Federation officer, he was entitled to take advantage of the same exchange program that in the past had brought Confederate personel to Federation installations and vessels. As a result, he was granted permission to attend the AQDF Staff College for the Combat leadership/Command course. Finally having found a 'true' challenge, he excelled at the program, throwing himself wholesale into the class, and graduating in the top ten percent of 1,000 students.

His credentials and reputation as an excellent, intuitive officer gave rise to the unique opportunity (one, that sometimes quite literally, is a once in a life time offer) to be on the senior staff of an experimental vessel. The Legacy Class, although similar in outward appearance to the Sovereign class with only some minor differences in appearance, was Starfleet's first totally 'new' design since the introduction of the disappointing Pathfinder Class starship, a dismal failure in the new environment, being far too resource-intensive and combat oriented to perform the multi-mission operations called for in Starfleet.

As the Chief Tactical Officer for the one-year long shakedown cruise and performance evaluation, Aran was tasked with evaluating the ship's weapons and defensive measures, and suggesting suitable improvements and changes. It was supposed to be controled tests in a scientific environment to establish the ship's potential, however soon after it's launching the Legacy found itself as the only Starship in range when the Breen raided Outpost 12, a sub-terranian security and intelligence center along the border. Captain Jennifer Nettles decided she had to respond, especially as it became obvious there were survivors on the planet. The Legacy entered into the fray, and despite being just out of the ship-yards and hardly broken in, crew and vessel performed superbly. The Legacy destroyed a pair of Breen Destroyers and a cruiser, disabling a fourth vessel in twenty minutes of heavy exchanges. Dispatching relief teams in shuttles, Captain Nettles ordered the Legacy to pursue, chasing the attackers back into Breen space before giving up the pursuit and returning to the system.

Aran was promoted for his part in the Legacy's performance, to Lieutenant Commander, and given a third commendation after helping out with the outpost relief efforts and promptly securing the facility, neutralizing light opposition in the process.

When the Legacy returned to Utopia Planitia for complete evaluation and crew rotation, Aran discovered the STARS program, and applied for the next upcoming class. He was accepted, and finally found the challenge in the Federation he had always been looking for. STARS training was rugged, multi-faceted, and above all difficult. He was finally able to apply all the techniques he had learned elsewhere, and ranked high in the graduating class. Given his experiences, training performance, and overall evaluation, Aran was assigned to STARS team seven. After a brief interlude at the STARS Crimea field training facility, the entire team was attached to USS Prospero in 2411.
