| BACKGROUND & HISTORY |
Marco was born in a traditional Sicilian family. His grandfather had made a fortune with trade and his father had even enlarged the Angelucci empire. Not all the trade they did was completely legal and even Ferengi had some respect for Mauriziano Angelucci. He was educated together with his younger brother and sister by private tutors. They didn't see their parents often, as his father was mostly gone for work and his mother was a civilian who worked at Starfleet HQ. This brought the three children, who were born only 3 years apart, together and crossing one invariably meant crossing the other two. Their free time was spent roaming around the sunny island. This idyllic life ended in 2374 when the Breen attacked Earth. Starfleet was outgunned and the Breen did heavy damage. Starfleet HQ was a prime target and Marco's mother was one of the victims. As a result his father buried himself in his work and became even more absent. Consequently the three children grew even closer and started to do some mischief. It was here that Marco found that he had an aptitude with electronic systems. When he was 14 he made a hovervehicle to race on the country roads of the island. When the police finally caught them, they were amazed that Marco had build the vehicle himself. When puberty hit, he started to long for other things then his siblings. He wanted to travel, to see other cultures. His father started to take Marco with him on short trips that he deemed not dangerous. Marco simply loved it. His father liked it less that he spent so much time with the grease monkeys in the engineering room. But for Marco this was a whole new world and the engineers saw in him the genuine love for all things technical. They showed him the inner workings of the warp core, the jefferies tubes and all other things on the trading vessel. His father wasn't pleased and after a number of arguments he simply refused to take Marco with him on his next trip. Marco retaliated by joining Starfleet as soon as he turned 18. While his father probably wouldn't have objected had he joined the Academy - Starfleet had saved him from pirates a couple of times - Marco went to basic training. He wanted to do things, not shuffle papers whole day long. His travels on his father's trade ship had given him an advantage over the other recruits. While Federation Starships are generally faster and better made, the technologies themselves were very similar, so he could use what he had learned the two years before. He graduated at the top of his group, but his attitude gave some problems. He had been privately tutored and on his father's ship he had been the boss' son, so he had a strong sense of superiority which had not changed when he found out that he knew more then his fellow recruits. It took a Master Chief petty officer and the back of the compound to teach him some manners. After this incident, he started to work together with the rest of the recruits, and he also took up Thai-boxing. After his training, he's placed on the USS Repulse as warp core technician. The Repulse, NCC2544 was an old Excelsior, upgraded over the years, but still an old ship. Here he learned that modern trading ships or classroom situations are nothing like an almost 100 year old ship of the line which has seen too many battles. A Senior Chief saw the promise in the young lad and took him under his wings. For two years he would stay on the Repulse, gaining a lot of experience not only on warpcores, but also on the other ship's systems. Often systems fail, and when you’re on patrol and in combat with pirates, it's not fun. He got his first purple hart here while he was repairing a shield generator that exploded. In 2384 he's promoted to Petty Officer 3rd class, quick but not overly so. A day after his promotion he received the news that his brother, who had started as helm officer at the Academy, had died in a shuttle crash. He immediately returned to Earth. After the funeral he had another big argument with his father, who blamed Marco for luring his brother into Starfleet. Marco had the same temperament like his father and he stormed out and hasn't returned home since, although he does keep in contact with his sister, who followed in her father's steps. His next posting was Starbase 74, one of the biggest starship construction facilities. Now came the next step in his training, building warp cores and other ship systems. The ships he helped build in the four years he was on Starbase 74 included two Sovereign class ships. In 2392 the USS Endeavour becomes his next post. Now a Petty Officer 1st class, he becomes the XO of the propulsion division, under an ensign almost straight from the Academy. Since he helped install propulsion systems for 4 years, he had a very good knowledge of them. He stayed onboard of the Endeavor for 6 years except for one year where he followed Forensic Engineering training. After the Aean threat became apparent, they moved to DS9 where they would become part of a task force to try to capture an Aean sample. The mission was a disaster and the Endeavour only barely escaped. But they got another chance when they found a Galor that was only partially destroyed. Marco volunteered to be part of the crew that would beam over. While the medics where working on the wounded Cardassians, Marco tried to restart the Galor. But it quickly became clear that it was of no use, so he helped the scientists make a set of forcefields that would keep the Aean sample in check so they could bring it back for further study. As soon as that was done, they moved away as quickly as possible. For his actions Marco and the rest of the team received the Medal of Honour. Soon a method was devised to counter the Aean and the Endeavour was one of the first ships to be equipped with a tetra-dynamic radiation emitter. With those emitters, the Aean threat was quickly subdued. Now came another time to rebuild the fleets and in 2395 Marco, now a Senior Chief petty officer, was transferred to the USS Valley Forge, a refitted Galaxy class. It quickly became clear that during the last refit, a number of systems had been fitted with lower grade components. While these things happened, as Marco well knew, it shouldn’t happen on this scale. Also the fact that almost all of the components were part of the non-replicable storage made him and his chief engineer suspicious. Now his forensic training became useful and he worked together with the security department to trace the criminals. In 2397 he left the Valley Forge to go to command training for enlisted. This training for senior enlisted prepared them to become liaisons between the officers and the enlisted, including in major fleets and HQs. On ships, they served as the Chief of boat. They were also Bridge qualified and able to command a department or a complete starship in case of emergencies. After completing this program, Marco was assigned as senior enlisted at the basic training facility. Now it was time to teach to young people what he had learned in his long career. In 2399 the science division of the basic training program got a new lab tech trainer, Senior Chief petty officer R’Marr, a Caitian. It immediately clicked between Marco and R’Marr and when R’Marr went in heat, Marco helped her out. But during this period they got bonded, which mean that their bodies reacted on a molecular level on each other’s pheromones, so that long-term separation meant that they would experience withdrawal symptoms. Bonding between a Caitian and a non-Caitian were very rare, but it had happened before. While Marco didn’t feel it as much as R’Marr, he did feel something and beginning of 2400 they married. When he had served as instructor for three years, he wanted to go somewhere else. He and R’Marr applied for a transfer but it took one more year before it was granted. He was transferred to Utopia, where he supervised a propulsion team that had to build the prototypes the designers came up with and she was transferred to a lab around Saturn. She would come over every evening to their quarters on Mars. Now a Master Chief petty officer, he quickly got head to head with some of the designers when he reported that one of their new designs was not feasible. While it was in a theoretical sense, he knew that on a starship it wouldn’t work due to the high maintenance requirements and some alignment problems in the nacelles. The fact that he was proven right when they tried to put it into a test ship didn’t sit well with the scientists. But the CO of the division knew his service record and stepped in to prevent things from going out of hand. After three years he was transferred back to the Valley Forge . R’Marr went with him of course and became an astrophysics tech. Marco served as chief of boat even though he kept his duties in engineering. It was a happy time for the couple. But there came an end to this happy time in 2408 when Valley Forge was attacked by a group of rogue Romulans. They managed to drive of the attackers, but most of the crew had died because the Romulans had put boarding parties on the Galaxy class ship. Among the dead was not only most of the engineering department, but also R’Marr. While Caitians had a defence mechanism to prevent withdrawal syndrome when one of the partners died, Marco did not and he felt devastated. For the past eight years they had done everything not duty related together. But he didn’t have time to grieve as the captain gave him a field promotion to ensign and made him acting chief engineer. With the few crew members he had left plus all people with some engineering experience he could steal from other departments he managed to get the ship operational enough to limp back to the nearest starbase. When they arrived at Starbase 480, Marco’s promotion was approved by the Admiral in charge of the fleet and on top he also received the Federation Order of Merit. But the loss of his wife made him try to find luck in a bottle, also to counter the withdrawal symptoms he started to feel by now. Lucky for him the captain of Valley Forge had gone through the same thing a number of years earlier and he and the ship’s counsellor managed to get him back on track before disciplinary action had to be taken, except for one reprimand for drunk and disorderly behaviour. He kept regular sessions with the counsellor while Valley Forge was in drydock and got medication for the withdrawal symptoms. Just before the ship would be launched again, Marco was promoted to lieutenant (jg) and transferred to USS Anzio, an intrepid class to become her assistant chief engineer. For Marco this was the opportunity to learn about the finer aspects of paperwork under an experienced chief engineer. Lucky for him paperwork hadn’t been that important during his time as acting chief on Valley Forge as he had been busy keeping the ship from exploding. And while he had some experience as senior NCO – even they didn’t escape it – he had managed to keep it as limited as possible. But there was no escaping now. He stayed on Anzio for four years before they transferred him. They had discovered something new on Starbase Atlantis, even after all those years and one of the scientists remembered a pain in the ass engineer who knew something about propulsion systems. So he was transferred to Starbase Atlantis, given a promotion to lieutenant and given the task of finding out what that piece of technology was supposed to be doing. It took him two years, but in the end he managed to get a breakthrough. It turned out to be a propulsion system based on creating wormholes to travel through. But the Federation lacked the necessary technology to build engines like this, especially since the one they had was broken. Also power requirements were such that only the biggest starships could meet them. His next posting was another were someone with a good grasp of the newest technology was necessary. USS Prospero had been found and Starfleet needed someone who could find out what had gone wrong. |
| PERSONALITY PROFILE |
Marco has a career of more then 30 years behind him and he has seen it all. This has made him quite cynic at times. As a Mustang he relies on the NCOs quite heavily and he can’t stand people who think they’re just part of the furniture. He still thinks about his wife quite often and seeing a Caitian that looks like her can get him in a depressive mood. Just like with drug addicts the need for the drug (in his case his wife’s pheromones that were bonded with his) is still there, even though he doesn’t have any withdrawal effects anymore. From time to time, especially around important dates from their relationship, it’s difficult. Regular counselling sessions keep these problems in check, but he can get mood swings during those days. |
